Since I (we) travel on a budget, I (we) don't really get the services of travel tours. I (we) arrange my (our) own transpo, prepare my (our) own itinerary (ies), book my (our) own hotel(s), find my (our) way to and from where ever. Here are the trip destinations where I (we) did just that:

Iloilo-Guimaras
Bohol
Caramoan Islands
Mt. Pinatubo
Tagaytay City
Puerto Princesa City
I must admit it saves you the hassle if you just leave everything to travel agents but do-it-yourself trips always work for me (us) having to decide what and which, where and how long, and of course to cut and trim down (with all the adjustments possible) our already cheap budgets. :)
In my various Do-It-Yourself trips I have learned to master answering the three (3) most important and basic questions to survive in any trip:
Where to stay? Canvas and book accommodations.
How to go around? Hire? Then contact vans or cars for rent. Commute? Print a map and familiarize directions.
What are the activities? List the attractions - common and not. Then plan itinerary.
...of course, budget being considered. I often set a budget then work with that.
